HINGE

A global system for design and experience across products and markets.

Historically, AIG has struggled to maintain consistent user interface design across its portfolio of digital products and sites. Often, individual teams created and used one-off pattern libraries and frameworks. In addition to creating confusion, this lack of continuity also generated real costs and delays in product development.

Launching a unified design system for a heterogeneous environment.

The beta Hinge system launched with designers on the Experience Design (XD) team in March 2018.

In the following months our team continued to research, test and iterate incremental releases. We also socialized Hinge across the enterprise, on boarding more teams and cultivating buy-in with senior leaders. All of this culminated in a v2.0 release in December 2018.

Quieting noise in the system.

AIG is comprised of four legal entities, each using their own technology stack.  To add to the noise, AIG has a loose governing structure when it comes to branding and oversight.  With HINGE, the experience design team unified all of AIG around a single source of interface design truth.

Hinge gives teams across the business a guide and a universal toolkit composed of vanilla HTML, functional CSS, Sketch library, Axure library, Angular components, React components, and a Swift library as of now.
